Jock Itch Signs & Symptoms

Do Your Symptoms Fit the Diagnostic Criteria of Jock Itch?

What is Jock Itch?

Jock itch, is technically known as Tinea Cruris.

It is a common fungal infection often found in warm and moist areas of the body such as the groin or inner thighs.

It can cause a painful, burning or itchy rash.

It’s a common problem for male athletes – that’s where the name comes from. But you don’t have to play a sport or be a guy to get it. It can happen to anyone, male or female.

The good news is that jock itch is treatable and preventable. So don’t worry.

Symptoms of Jock Itch

Jock itch often starts as a rash in the groin fold, usually on both sides. The rash will usually be red with rounded edges to it. As the rash grows it usually advances down the inner thigh. The advancing edge is redder and more raised than the darker reddish-brown areas that have been infected longer.

The advancing edge of the rash is often scaly and is very distinct compared to normal surrounding skin.

The rash can be painful and extremely itchy. It can often spread quickly to include:

  • Groin
  • Inner thighs
  • Skin folds
  • Buttocks and the crease of your buttocks

Other Frequently Asked Questions

Can jock itch spread onto genitals?

Jock itch or Tinea Cruris usually involves the groin area but does not involve the vulva, scrotum or penis.

If those areas are involved, it may be candida albicans, the same type of yeast that causes vaginal yeast infections in women. Check with a medical professional.

Could it be something else?

Yes. Unfortunately, there are many causes of skin rash. Other possibilities may include:

  • Psoriasis
  • Intertrigo
  • Erythrasm
  • Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Should I stop having sex until my jock itch clears up?

Yes, you should. Since this fungal infection is contagious, it could be transferred to your partner during sex.
